FREEDOM. SAFTEY. NOW. CREATIVE ACTION AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Freedom. Safety. NOW

We profiled Jaishri Abichandani in our WOMEN RISING program #14.  Jaishri is an Indian artist based both in New York and Mumbai.   She is one of the founders of SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN’S CREATIVE COLLECTIVE.  This weekend of January 19-21, 2012 Jaishri and SAWCC will be staging a protest at the Indian consulate in New York, urging India to implement freedom and safety for Indian women.

We have all been devastated by the rapes in India, by the violence and brutality of them…. and by the snide, insensitive comments from the lawyer defending the five Delhi bus rapists.  He said that as far as he knew, no “lady” was ever raped on a bus in India.  We all know that’s how rapists get off, by colluding with their lawyers to waste the reputations of their victims.

This kind of character assassination, and violent rapes, are endemic worldwide, not only in India.  We laud SAWCC for its commitment to changing that status quo…

SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN’S CREATIVE COLLECTIVE will stage a flash mob, and other activities in front of the consulate this weekend.  Check out their website to view videos, and to learn more…
